Night Call, Collect
Thanks to the Spike for betaing and Bas for audiencing.

"Yes, of course I'll accept the charges; put him on."

"Lex?" Exhale, then steady. "Where are you?"

"I'm not...not really sure. I think I must be pretty high."

"It's four in the morning and you're too high to know where you are?" Frustrated sigh. "For Christ's sake, Lex, you're only sixteen years old!"

"Yes. Yes, I am. Sixteen years, four months, and three days. Funny you should think of that now."

Pause. "You're not that high."

"High enough. I think I'm in a back room at a club. That's what it looks like, anyway. I don't remember how I got here."

"Do you have a car outside?"

"I really don't think I should drive, Dad. Unless you want to bail me out again. My feet are having a hard time finding the floor and I keep throwing up."

"Lex, what did you take?"

"Well, now, that's the funny part. I don't remember taking anything. Did...did we drink a lot at dinner?"

"Don't be ridiculous. I let you have one glass of brandy. To drink to your mother, on her birthday."

"You had more, though, right?"

"I had...enough." Pause. "More than enough. But that has nothing to do with it."

Nervous giggle. "I don't know about that. There's no...no separation. We share the same blood, don't--"

"Lex. I'm going to send someone to get you. Go find out where you are and call me back."

"What if I don't want to come home?"

Tiny skip of the breath. "Of course you want to come home. You know perfectly well you shouldn't be out in your condition."

Wild laughter. "And what condition is that?"

Deadly silence.

Laughter choked to nothing. "Right," said hastily. "The condition of not remembering how I got here, or why I can't stand up, or...or...dinner. Good point."

"I said you had a good point!" Pause. "I'm at the Shelter."

"All right. I'll send Pietro."

"Can't he take me to the penthouse instead of the mansion? Or maybe we could go to Smallville--"

"Lex." Firmly. "I can't remember much of the evening, either."

"Oh. I see. I guess I should just come...home, then."

"Yes, you should. Pietro will be there in fifteen minutes. I won't be up when you get here. Good night, Lex." *click*
